Linux.org A starting point for Linux, contains a list of *every* Linux distribution available.

GNU.org  The home GNU Project and the Free Software Foundation. It is the freedoms enabled by these people that allow us to be and remain here by providing software licenses such as the GPL

Distros:

Ubuntu Linux The most popular free Linux distribution, based on Debian. Live CD with an installer. Supported by the Ubuntu Forums

Debian The purist's distro. The free distro of choice for servers.

Debian Planet The Debian community website.

Knoppix Runs directly from a CD and doesn't need to be installed. Excellent distribution. I use this myself as it can be installed if you want to.

Mandriva Linux The ease of use distro..

Red Hat Linux Biggest in North America. Good corporate distibution.

Slackware The hacker's distro (not cracker!).

SmoothWall Highly customised, cut down version of Linux for specific use as a firewall on a low spec dedicated machine, ideal for old redundant 486s and early Pentiums that would otherwise be on the scrapheap. Also provides certain network services such as routing, NAT and other such niceties (i.e. the ability to distribute an otherwise single-PC, USB ADSL, cable or dial-up modem connection across a local network via Ethernet). There is a howto here for BT Openworld. I'm sure the instructions are generic enough, though you may have to change your ISP specifics. This is the GPL edition; they also have a Corporate Edition

Novell SUSE Linux Corporate version of openSUSE.

Turbolinux Biggest in Asia.
