You really should use Mozilla Firefox, it is Free Software, cross-platform, standards-compliant browser. Internet security organisation CERT, recommended that people stop using Microsoft's Internet Explorer as their web browser and use Mozilla Firefox or another web browser instead. As the most advanced browser available, you should be using Firefox.

If you use Firefox you will not be susceptible to all of the viruses written for Internet Explorer. I really can't sing it's praises enough. As you can probably tell...

Cnet download centre. Fully searchable download site that's got just about everything for every OS. If it ain't 'ere, it don't exist.
Tucows An enormous array of mirror sites around the world, so you should be able to find what you want and it'll be near you.

Games

Classic Video Game Emulators. From the Playstation to the Atari 2600 and everything in between. Also has links to Rom sites, so you can get the games too. You really will be surprised. Am I the only person who owned a Coleco Vision?
World of Spectrum. The ultimate ZX Spectrum site, emulators and games in seconds.

Instant Messaging

Pidgin. Pidgin is a multi-protocol instant messaging program, that means it can talk to pretty much every common instant messaging service including MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, Jabber and IRC chatrooms all at the same time. It used to be known as Gaim until AOL took exception to this and made the project change it's name. Pidgin is free to download

Office Suite

OpenOffice.org. Sun opensourced the code behind Star Office and allowed the Internet hacker community to rewrite and enhance it. This is the best free Office Software available, aims to be feature complete when compared with Microsoft Office and can import and export MS Office file formats. The only parts lacking are a database and the document templates which were third party tools and hence could not be opensourced. It is presumably only a matter of time before this is resolved. This is exactly the same code that makes up Star Office, the only differences being the omission of the database software, the templates, the support and the need to pay for it. If you want an Office package and don't want to pay, get this one. Word Processor, Spreadsheet, HTML editor, Presentation package and more.

Windows Tools

Adobe Acrobat Reader. One of those programs that you have sitting around for years before eventually uninstalling because you could use the space for something else. Then BANG! you get a PDF file in the form of that all important 'Help' file you need to save your life. Shit, you got rid of Acrobat Reader. Well get it here.

Nero Burning Rom. The best CD burning software available, 30 day trial, go here to get a crack for it.
Window Washer. Get rid of all the unnecessary crap from your computer. This is miles better than Windows Disk Cleanup. Capable of overwriting sensitive material until it's unrecoverable to US Government standards and allows you to specify stuff to keep.
WinZip. This is the universal standard for handling Zip files. Quite easy to use in standard mode if you're not quite sure what you're doing.
